On December 15, 1791 the Bill of Rights was the first piece of legislation adopted by the First Congress. Read in context, the Bill of Rights is both an affirmation of innate individual rights and a clear delineation on constraints upon the central government. As oft trampled and abused as the Bill of Rights is, Patriots should remain vigilant in the fight for our rights.” Alexander Hamilton

Fact: As a nation we have always acknowledged that our rights and liberties come from God as expressed in the Declaration of Independence. The truth is that over the years with the passage of so many laws government has actually infringed on our God given rights. When rights are granted by government it is only a matter of time before they are taken away by the same government. God’s rights and liberties are never rescinded.

The Founder’s believed in Natural Rights or Law for all people. In other words they believed that inherent in every person was a concept of right and wrong, conscience, and a desire for freedom. So before God, through Moses, brought forth the written law – The Ten Commandments – most of those ten basic laws were understood to be true. People inherently knew that murder was wrong, lying was wrong, adultery was wrong, etc.

The Founder’s knew that God was the giver of liberty and that man through government would abuse that power and gradually seek to control individual rights and freedoms.
The nature of government is to control and grow more powerful. The thing that has hurt us the most is “time”. The more time that has passed from the beginning of America the more complacent the people have grown and with that complacency the gradual acceptance of a larger and larger federal government with fewer and fewer individual rights.

In other words we have gradually forgotten our heritage until it has finally been removed from our history books or rewritten with a negative slant. Consequently, there are at least four generations that have been deprived an adequate education regarding true American history and values. Since the 1950’s American universities have been promoting an anti-American viewpoint that has resulted in the rewriting of our history towards a negative view of America. At the same time academics began painting a rosy and romanticized picture of socialism and Communism.

Therefore, we have seen a gradual move away from individual rights with each piece of new legislation that is passed. America was built on the foundation of individual rights given to us by God.  As time has passed we have become complacent and allowed our rights to be infringed upon.  I believe we are in the middle of an awakening to the rights we are losing through government fiat and I pray that we will actively engage our representatives to make sure they protect the Bill of Rights from being further eroded.

Dinner Table Discussion Question: Read the First Amendment to the Constitution and ask which parts of that Amendment are under attack today or have been greatly watered down and how We the People can defend our God given rights.
